Thanks to Dr. Patricia Barrios Skrok from IBFAN Argentina for this tribute to the amazing Anwar Fazal on his 83rd Birthday (15th July)
Anwar Fazal (born 15 July 1941 in rural Malaysia) is a prominent civil society activist on multidimensional issues such as consumer rights, health, environment, urban governance, heritage and peace. In 1982, he received the Right Livelihood Award for “fighting for consumer rights and helping them do the same.” [1]
In 1978, he became the first Third World person to become president of the International Organization of Consumer Unions (IOCU). [2] [1] In the following years he became a crucial figure in the international consumer movement, founding several global networks, which he called “a new wave of the consumer movement.” [2] [1] These included the International Action Network for Child Food (IBFAN), founded in 1979; the International Action for Health (HAI), created in 1981; and the Pesticide Action Network (PAN), formed in 1982.
