URGENT | PROFITS OVER LIFE: A PLASTICS TREATY ALREADY DEAD ON ARRIVAL
Press release

Centre Europe – Tiers Monde (CETIM) – 14 August 2025

From August 5 to 14, 2025, UN Member States met in Geneva for what was supposed to be the final round of negotiations on the International Treaty on Plastic Pollution. Instead of an ambitious and binding agreement, talks collapsed under the influence of transnational corporations (TNCs) and oil-producing States.

Major petrochemical giants, including Dow, ExxonMobil, and Shell, sent hundreds of lobbyists to block measures on reducing plastic production and legal accountability. The latest draft removes all binding commitments, making any final deal meaningless for people and the planet.

CETIM denounces this corporate capture and warns: without strong measures to cut production and hold polluters accountable, there will be no real treaty—only a licence for continued plastic pollution.
