The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Infant Feeding & Inequalities works to bring together Members of Parliament (MP) to work together to improve infant feeding policies. Following the election in June 2017, it is necessary to reconvene the APPG – you can help bring this about if you are in the UK.

The UK is committed to the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, which aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and to ensure that parents who use breastmilk substitutes receive accurate, independent information. Implementing the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and subsequent, relevant Resolutions of the World Health Assembly forms part of the strategy and Baby Milk Action made a presentation on this on 17 May 2016, leading to action in Parliament that strengthened enforcement measures. The World Breastfeeding Trends initiative (WBTi) assesses progress in implementing the strategy and the first UK report was launched at the APPG on 15 November 2016.

The Global Strategy has not yet been fully implemented in the countries of the UK and the APPG will continue to explore the policy options, while hearing from experts on how these will contribute to improving infant and young child feeding practices, improving short and long-term health outcomes and reducing health inequalities.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Infant Feeding & Inequalities is very much needed to discuss how to support parents better with regard to infant and young child feeding.

All parents and carers have a right to accurate, independent information, however they feed their children. Action is needed to achieve this.

The next meeting for the APPG will be held on Tuesday 18 July 2017 from 1pm – 3pm in Committee Room 17 and is hosted by Alison Thewliss MP.
