Grassroots organizations oppose the UN Food Systems Summit

Rome, Italy. July 2021.

“At a time when poverty rates, economic disparity, conflicts and hunger are rising, the Food Systems Summit and the N4G promote short term treatment models, with little attempt to create real sustainable changes in food systems. The agro-industrial model bears much of the blame for the climate crisis and poor diets. Its reliance on market-led approaches and export-oriented trade of ultra-processed products inevitably leads to increased deforestation, land-grabbing, mono-cropping etc.

Over 300 global civil society organizations of small-scale food producers, researchers and Indigenous Peoples’ will gather online (25-28 July) to protest against the UN Food Systems Pre-Summit. The People’s Counter-Mobilization to Transform Corporate Food Systems is the latest in a series of rejections of the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS),
